Google can now translate text from images on the web

Google Translate on the web can now convert text from images. It uses the same tech as the AR Translate tool for Google Lens, which performs real-time translations on smartphones. You'll find the option on the Google Translate website, where you'll see a new Images tab at the top. After uploading a photo or screenshot from your computer, a translation appears that (in most cases) should look about as seamless as the original text. The web interface includes options to copy the text, download the translated image or clear it.

Google turns to machine learning to advance translation of text out in the real world

Google is giving its translation service an upgrade with a new machine learning-powered addition that will allow users to more easily translate text that appears in the real world, like on storefronts, menus, documents, business cards and other items. Instead of covering up the original text with the translation -- the new feature will instead smartly overlay the translated text on top of the image, while also rebuilding the pixels underneath with an AI-generated background to make the process of reading the translation feel more natural. "Often it's that combination of the word plus the context -- like the background image -- that really brings meaning to what you're seeing," explained Cathy Edwards, VP and GM of Google Search, in a briefing ahead of today's announcement. "You don't want to translate a text to cover up that important context that can come through in the images," she said. To make this process work, Google is using a machine learning technology known as generative adversarial networks, otherwise known as GAN models -- the same technology that powers the Magic Eraser feature to remove objects from photos taken on the Google Pixel smartphones.

Researchers use AI to translate text found on ancient clay tablets

Scientists at the University of Chicago are developing a machine learning system that can automatically transcribe text found on ancient clay tablets. The DeepScribe system will initially focus on transcribing the Cuneiform writing system used in the ancient Iranian Achaemenid Empire (550–330 BC), the University of Chicago News reports. Existing computer systems struggle to translate this script, due to its complex characters and the 3D form of the tablets on which they're written. The team of researchers from the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute and its Department of Computer Science thinks their system could do better. To build the model, they're training it on more than 6,000 annotated images from the Persepolis Fortification Archive.
